PILPG Circle of Former Ambassadors of the UN Human Rights Council Statement in Response to the Situation in Sudan
May 18, 2023
Sudan has been the theater of the most protracted conflict in Africa and human suffering for several decades. Efforts to transition towards a civilian-led democratic government were recently thwarted by an eruption of violence between the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) and the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) on April 15, 2023.
Today, the situation in Sudan underscores the most extreme elements of a humanitarian crisis - armed conflict, famine, death, hunger and malnutrition, lack of essential services, and displacement of peoples.
The numbers are staggering: According to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), more than 164,000 people have fled Sudan since the fighting erupted on April 15. Further, The International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimates that 736,000 people are newly displaced in Sudan.
PILPG’s Circle of Former Ambassadors have released a Statement addressing the current situation in Sudan, calling for a ceasefire between the RSF and SAF, and affirming its support for the Sudanese people, uninterrupted humanitarian aid and strong regional and international support in restoring peace and civilian leadership.
